Saturday Night Chat - May 31, 2014

Welcome to Saturday Night Chat on TNAMecca!  Although we aren't an open forum where members can start their own threads, our sense of community spirit is what sets us apart from other wrestling sites so we thought it'd be fun to give our members the ability to dictate the discussion for one night a week.  Anything goes in Saturday Night Chat but we do ask that all topics remain TNA-related and stay on topic. You can also discuss any rumors from any source regardless of how ludicrous they might sound.  However, the same etiquette rules that apply to our comments section in general also will apply here, including our policy on spoilers.

TNA Stars Invade the Amazing Race!

CBS officially revealed the cast of next season's the Amazing Race this morning and it appears that two members of the cast will be TNA stars Robbie E and Brooke Tessmacher.  You can see the duo in the above photo, wearing lime green shirts, taken earlier this morning when the taping of the show officially began in New York City and will last until July.  This has United Talent Agency written all over it and it's great as the partnership with TNA is already paying dividends.  Click here to read the full press release by CBS.

Post-IMPACT Discussion for May 29, 2014

One of my favorite activities after watching Impact is searching for forums in which fans can talk about the show and share with one another their thoughts.  However, it's getting increasingly harder to find venues where TNA fans can safely express their opinions on Impact without having to deal with the trolling of the anti-TNA crowd or the smarks who insist on taking the fun out of pro wrestling.

For this reason, we felt it was important to make TNAMecca available to our readers and any TNA fans who would like to discuss the show after watching it.  You can now visit TNAMecca immediately following Impact to do exactly that in the comments section below each and every week.  So please feel free to share with us your thoughts on tonight's Impact from Orlando.  What did you think of the show?  What did you like or dislike?  Let us know.

Rumour Killer: NYC Shows ARE Selling Well

A rumour began circulating today concerning the ticket sales for the three Impact tapings next month in New York City, claiming that sales were not very good and that the tickets weren't moving fast. Since I've been tracking the sales since day one, I can inform you all the story is 100% false and the sales are doing rather well. The story claims the layout only holds 800, when it can actually hold a maximum of 1,200 people, with around 1,100 tickets put on sale and some yet to be released for sale. The current number of tickets sold for the June 25th show is 591, with 507 tickets still available. The June 26th show has sold 605 with 495 still on sale, and the June 27th show has currently sold 730 tickets with 374 still available.

The report also states that while the front row for all three shows is sold out, there are a lot of ringside seats still available, which once again is simply not true. The total seats available in the ringside area is 646, and as it stands the June 25th show has 171 still on sale, the June 26th show has 167 available & the June 27th show only has 76 seats left. Like I said, the story is totally false with all the points it reports, and seeing as I have this information that I have collected since the shows went on sale, I thought I'd give you guys the real numbers and shoot down this rumour. We'll keep you updated on sales for both the June & August NYC tapings in the coming weeks.

CONFIRMED: The Von Erichs to Wrestle at Slammiversary!

The Von Erichs, Ross and Marshall, are teasing on their official Facebook account that they will be wrestling at this year's Slammiversary.  It looks like they've posted their entire itinerary for the weekend in Dallas so it appears that this could be legit.  For those who aren't familiar, the Von Erichs were a pro wrestling family, dating back to the 60's, that was very well respected by fans.  I believe Ross and Marshall are Kevin Von Erich's boys and first cousins of Lacey Von Erich, formerly of the Beautiful People. We will continue to monitor this story and hopefully, we will have some sort of confirmation from TNA soon.  Kudos to TNAMecca supporter Alfred Brickrock for the heads up. More to come...

UPDATE: TNA has just confirmed on their official site that the Von Erichs will indeed wrestle at Slammiversary on June 15th and their father Kevin Von Erich will be in their corner.  This is fantastic news.

TNA Thursday Randomania - May 29, 2014

- If you read my Ringside review of Impact, you'd know that I loved last week's show.  I'm not one of those who typically cares whether or not we get lots of wrestling.  I'm fine with either actually.  But I feel that a wrestling show is most successful when good storylines and feuds are the focal point, not the matches.  To me, pro wrestling has always been about two men wanting to kick the shit out of each other by any means necessary, whether it's in the ring or not.  That's what I've enjoyed the most.  Somewhere along the way, wrestling fans convinced themselves that pro wrestling needs to be about competition in order to be successful.  I don't disagree completely as I do believe there are instances when competition should be highlighted and that's when a championship belt is involved.  But again, I do think in this case that storylines serve a purpose.

The Great Muta to Appear at June 25th NYC Impact Taping!

TNA just tweeted the following, announcing that Wrestle-1 founder and Japanese Legend The Great Muta will appear at the June 25 Impact Wrestling TV Taping in New York City:

This is a pretty cool addition to the first TV taping in New York. The current situation is this, Destination X is rumoured to take place during the first set of NYC tapings, and currently Sanada is the X Division Champion, so this could possibly mean that Sanada will cash in the X Division Title for a World Championship match, and Muta will appear to endorse, or even possibly corner Sanada before his big World Title match. It's also a nice little addition to the June 25 show, it makes the taping unique from the other 2 that week, and may entice fans who aren't attending the Wednesday taping to now do so.

CONFIRMED: TNA to Tape Impact in New York City in August

PWInsider is reporting that TNA will return to the Manhattan Center in August for Impact tapings.  The tapings will take place on August 5th through the 7th.  There had been rumors about TNA returning to New York City in August and although PWInsider may indeed be correct, this should be considered a rumor until we get confirmation from TNA.  If true, this is going to be an interesting Summer in TNA as we will presumably get at least three months worth of Impact episodes in NYC. Kudos to TNAMecca supporter PhenomAJJones for the heads up.

UPDATE: TNA has now officially confirmed this report by listing the August dates on their events calendar on their site.  Click here to see the full listings.  Kudos to TNAMecca supporter Jeff for the heads up.

Should TNA Sign Roderick Strong?

Earlier in the year, Roderick Strong had reportedly attended a WWE tryout camp, along with fellow Ring of Honor talents Kevin Steen and ACH.  Other indie wrestlers who attended the same tryout were Willie Mack and Rocky Romero (of the Forever Hooligans).  Last week, it was reported that the WWE were planning to offer Steen and Mack a developmental contract whereas Strong, Romero, and ACH were not so lucky.  It appears that the WWE is currently not interested in any smaller wrestlers and this could, once again, be something TNA can certainly take advantage of.  Strong, to me, is an interesting case as he's in the prime of his career and I would imagine he's looking to follow the Wolves' path out of the indies and into a steady gig on national television.  What makes Strong intriguing is his versatility - he can fill any number of needs in TNA right now as an X Division or tag team wrestler.  TNA can also plug him into the main event or midcard mix and he wouldn't look out of place.  I think Strong's biggest asset, however, is the fact that he's a tremendous worker and TNA certainly is in need of those right now.  On the downside, his mic skills are quite mediocre but that's something he can eventually improve on with the help of TNA's staff.  So let me hear from you guys, would you like to see TNA pursue and perhaps sign Roderick Strong?  Share with us your thoughts on Strong, as well as Rocky Romero and ACH, in the comments section below.

Behind The Curtain: Volume V - Post Your Questions Now!

I'm planning to do a new Behind The Curtain Q&A soon, so I'm giving you guys the chance to send in your questions and have them answered in Volume V. There's several things in TNA right now that are hot topics amongst fans including the Slammiversary main event, The new #MVPKingLashley faction, the re-branding of Xplosion, this Summer's Impact tapings in the North East as much more. If you have a question on anything TNA related, or simply want to use your question to start discussion within the TNAMecca community concerning the topic, then make sure you post it in the comments section.

TNA Thursday Randomania - May 22, 2014

- I'll be honest, two weeks ago, I was a bit discouraged by the prospect of Eric Young vs MVP being the main event of this year's Slammiversary PPV.  In fact, I couldn't quite shake this feeling of dissatisfaction all week.  I'm generally a glass half-full kind of guy but I found it difficult to fully accept the decision to make MVP the #1 contender to the TNA world heavyweight championship.  I did, however, eventually come to grips with it because I felt that the MVP reveal came at a time when the world title scene needed it the most.  I said last week in my column that this opens up so many possibilities for feuds and subplots, and if last Thursday's Impact is any indication, I was right.

It's Time for TNA to go ALL IN!

It's looking more and more like TNA is finally placing a heavy bet (again) on going out on the road for the foreseeable future with IMPACT.  To me, it feels like the right time also, as we have again been forced to endure the mostly cold, occasionally hot Impact Zone in Orlando.  It's been exactly 6 months since the company came back to Florida (minus the successful U.K. Tour of course) and reeled off multiple tapings after multiple tapings.  The real question is, "Did TNA intentionally plan this 6 month stint at the IZ to recoup financially and operationally?"  Nobody knows except for a select few people in the loop at TNA headquarters.  According to the dirtsheets and experts, you'd think they were in on classified meetings in which they were privy to the exact circumstances of TNA's TV network situation, employee payment situations, and morale issues.  So why wouldn't they also know if TNA had planned to go on the road all along or if they are "doomed to die in the next 6 months"?  Maybe TNA is just flying by the seat of their collective pants?  People that believe everything they read on the Internet, especially from pro-wrestling newzzzz sites, are as gullible and naive as humanly possible.  It seems all you need these days to run a site is the ability to copy and paste, closely followed by pushing the "run TNA down" agenda.  You could succeed and make advertising dollars doing SOLELY those 2 things.

#REWIND365: 05 - 18 May 2014

Welcome to #REWIND365 Where the Reaction Never Ends, a selective look at the fortnight's offerings from #IMPACT365.  Summer is here and TNA have begun paving the way to Slammiversary with a main event that had many fans in doubt.  However, as the pieces fall into place and his true intentions become known, it is clear that MVP had a most vindictive plan in mind when he bought into TNA.

#REWIND365 has been keeping tabs on all of the original content that didn't make it onto the televised shows, and provides a pick of some of the best in case you missed them.

TNA & ChallengeTV to Relaunch Xplosion on Saturdays

Dixie Carter tweeted the following, announcing that Xplosion would be undergoing a format and timeslot change as a new family-orientated show:

In the official press release, Jeremy Borash stated that the program would emphasize the X Division & the Knockouts, as well as continue to be the home of the Spin Cycle. This is a pretty smart move from TNA, in its current timeslot of 11PM on Wednesdays, it's late for some fans, and along with Challenge only really advertising Impact, Xplosion gets forgotten about by a good portion of the UK audience. With this change, the show is in a good timeslot for families, specifically kids. The amount of times I've heard the story "I remember watching wrestling on Saturday mornings" from both UK & U.S. fans is insane, so the move in that respect makes sense.

It's also interesting to hear JB mention some focus will be on the X Division & the Knockouts, which Xplosion has been ready made for for a long time. I also wonder if this is a strategic move from TNA regarding their U.S. TV situation. For the most part Xplosion was a highlights show, but now with it being aimed at families and having a specific focus, it could be a good thing to have in their portfolio when negotiating a new TV, and could possibly lead to Xplosion getting picked up in the U.S.

It's Time to Say Goodbye to Mike Tenay

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a POV on this new era in TNA and how it's not new in the way we think it is.  It's not a new creative direction nor is it a new booking philosophy.  TNA are simply changing the cast of characters.  It appears that the objective is to replenish the roster with a new set of wrestlers, essentially discarding the long time veterans who were no longer moving the needle yet were paid to do so.  Simply put, TNA is changing the faces.  I've already gone on record as to say that I think TNA are making the right decision, both from a creative and financial standpoint.

TNA Thursday Randomania - May 15, 2014

- Unfortunately, I was unable to contribute to last week's Ringside review due to internet issues but I'd like to briefly share with you my thoughts on the MVP heel turn, which was the biggest topic of conversation this week.  I think from a storyline standpoint, it makes things much more interesting in the world title scene.  We can debate the decision to turn MVP heel forever but the reality is that the world title picture, which had been stale and at times irrelevant, needed a jolt.  Eric Young as a fighting champion was a nice and welcome change of pace after the lame duck status of the previous titleholder but if Young is to leave his mark as a TNA world champion, he needs a feud that fans will look back on as the feud that put him on the map.  I believe a heel MVP who abuses his power could be that feud.

TNA Fans are a Patient Bunch

For those of us that have been TNA fans for multiple years, it's no secret that at varying times TNA has evolved, changed, ushered in many new eras, unsuccessfully revived outdated factions, clung on to dinosaur wrestlers and so on and so on.  However, throughout all of those different periods, there was a group of wrestlers that remained that gave TNA fans hope for the future.  AJ Styles was one of those wrestlers.  So was Kaz.  So was Daniels.  So was Chris Sabin.  And so were Bobby Roode, James Storm, Eric Young, Samoa Joe and others that are still in the company.  It is somewhat understandable how many fans have became frustrated in the last 6 months when they see some of these long-time TNA favorites not being re-signed.  I get it, I really do.  When you step back and evaluate your loyalty, does it only remain with those wrestlers that have now departed?  I have a lot of respect for sports fans that stick with their favorite teams.  Conversely it irritates me when sports fans become bandwagon fans for the current "hot team" at the time, or stop following a team based on one player being traded away or let go.  For most of us, TNA is our "favorite team" in professional wrestling.  It is sad to see some of our favorite players leave, but we've got to be able to move past it and look to the future.  In sports, players retire and get traded and don't re-sign all the time.  It's simply the way things are.

Why TNA Needs to Bring it at Slammiversary!

Well folks, it's May and that means June is right around the corner (thank you captain obvious!) which for TNA fans means we're not far off from Slammiversary! My calendar here in the cage lists this as just "Slammiversary month" and it'll be time for my lame jokes to the Mrs. of "Happy Slammiversary baby!" But I digress. The anniversary pay per view from TNA has always been one of the company's "crown jewel" shows and was an obvious choice to remain on as a live pay per view when TNA cut them back to four per year. While I am excited for TNA's next pay per view effort as I always am because I am a big fat TNA fanboy (at least that's what they call me on the internet); TNA has not had the best history when it comes to hyping their pay per view efforts. Look no further than last months Sacrifice. While the line up itself may have contained some good matches and interesting feuds, the show was barely mentioned on Impact until the go home show and even that seemed edited in. Now in my opinion, if TNA was running monthly shows that were successful every month they could get away with that once in a while. But let's face facts, TNA is not known for being very big on pay per view and now with only four shows a year, NO SHOW can be "B-level" and Slammiversary on June 15th is no exception. I feel like Slammiversary is going to be an important show for TNA for many reasons and I think there are many factors that TNA needs to realize when going into their 12th anniversary show and many reasons why they need to bring hype and build a card that gets people excited. So let's crack open the cage and take a look at why TNA needs to bring it at Slammiversary!

Hernandez Done with TNA

It appears that TNA have removed the profile of Hernandez from their roster on the company's website and has moved him to the Alumni section.  This is not surprising as Hernandez has not been seen on Impact since late last year.  I like this move simply because Hernandez had never fully taken advantage of any of the opportunities he was given.  It seemed like, every year, TNA attempted to push him either as a singles wrestler or in a tag team and it never quite clicked.  Hernandez was also not as young as fans thought he was.  He was over 40 years old and had yet to make any sort of impact in TNA.

Are Smaller Venues the Way Forward for Impact?

Several weeks ago TNA announced they would be running the Sands Bethlehem Event Center and the Manhattan Center for Impact Wrestling TV tapings in June. The interesting thing about both announcements was the size of the venues, which are much smaller than the venues TNA normally run for TV/PPV events. With the arenas TNA have selected, as well as Dixie Carter revealing there is no scheduled return to the Impact Zone, it begs the question “Is this the way forward?, will future TV tapings on the road be held in smaller arenas?” and if so, has it been planned for months?

REPORT: Kazarian Finished with TNA

Richard Gray of Wrestling News World is reporting that Kazarian finished up with the company as the One Night Only PPV taping this past weekend was his last with TNA.  This is not surprising as we expected his contract to expire soon.  Kazarian will soon join Christopher Daniels in free agency.  In a way, I'm glad this day has come as the entire process has been one big distraction for TNA fans.  Bad Influence can now move on to the next phase of their career and TNA can do so as well.

First Impression: The Menagerie

Welcome to TNAMecca's newest series, First Impression, in which our readers will get the opportunity to share with all of us their first impression of the new talents who debut on Impact.  With the influx of new talents that have already come to TNA and those soon to be, we thought it would be fun to evaluate their debut performances.  Last night, the Menagerie made their much-anticipated Impact debut.  In an interesting twist, the Freak and Crazzy Steve arrived, or shall I say, were delivered to the Impact Zone inside a wooden crate.  Inside the arena, the faction was accompanied by two men on stilts.  Firstly, what did you think of each member of the Menagerie?  Do they fit in the group? Secondly, what did you think of their entrance?  And lastly, did you feel they made an impact on day one?  Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Kurt Angle to Have Knee Surgery!

Alex Barie of TNANews is reporting that Kurt Angle will be having surgery to repair an ACL tear that will take him out of action for four to five months.  According to Barie, Angle contacted him this morning with the news of his injury.  This is unfortunate as it will most likely be the end of Kurt Angle in TNA but at the end of the day, he has to take care of his health.  This is not surprising as we saw Kurt Angle on tonight's Impact and he didn't look good at all.  Kudos to Angle for putting over Ethan Carter III on his way out.

TNA Thursday Randomania - May 8, 2014

- This week, I'd like to begin by giving a big kudos to TNA for doing the unthinkable.  They've essentially made fans care about a stable that's led by Knux, a former member of the Aces and 8's, which also includes Rob Terry.  I'm talking about the Menagerie, who are making their Impact debut tonight.  For this reason, much of the TNA fanbase is absolutely euphoric over it.  Since last week's Impact tapings, fans have been waiting with great anticipation for the opportunity to see the debut of this strange group of carnies, while living off of sneak peaks of Rebel or Crazzy Steve or the two strangers on stilts in the meantime.  It's wonderful to see how genuinely excited the fans are.  I only hope the Menagerie lives up to our expectations as TNA has an opportunity to truly capture us with a stable that's as unique as it is bizarre.

Eric Young: A Champion True to Himself

We're just over three weeks into The Reign of Eric Young and I must say it's been a very fun ride so far.  Skeptics were focused initially on the comparisons between EY and another bearded champion.  That comparison morphed into somewhat of an obsession.  That obsession has now bled over to critics nonsensically claiming that even The Menagerie is a rip-off of another group up north (and that's without seeing the group on TV yet).  They're required to have one apparently, so here's the new talking point of the anti-TNA group out there: TNA is copying the WWE.  Recently I read that Jim Ross feels that same way and is calling for "TNA to just focus on being TNA", amongst other things.  JR, just don't.  Do you even watch the show consistently Good Ol' JR?  Maybe you should put down the barbecued ribs and actually watch IMPACT objectively.  Oh wait, that's right, you can't do that because WWE still sells your product thus your opinion doesn't mean jack-shit.  I find it humorous that Dixie Carter called him out on Twitter when he recently claimed that "TNA needs to sign new talent".  Really?  Again, that's an indicator that he isn't really paying attention and should keep his trap shut about things he doesn't know.  But this POV isn't about the anti-TNA sentiment out there in the IWC.  It's about Showtime and his dream that has became a reality.

First Impression: Bram

Welcome to TNAMecca's newest series, First Impression, in which our readers will get the opportunity to share with all of us their first impression of the new talents who debut on Impact.  With the influx of new talents that have already come to TNA and those soon to be, we thought it would be fun to evaluate their debut performances.  Last night, Bram surprised Magnus by approaching him in the TNA locker room and essentially calling him out for his recent shenanigans, going as far as to describe him as soft.  Firstly, what did you think of Bram's backstory?  Was it realistic?  Secondly, what did you think about his overall physical appearance?  And lastly, did you feel he made an impact on day one?  Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Low Ki to Sign TNA Deal Soon?

A couple of weeks ago, Richard Gray of Wrestling News World reported that he was getting the impression that Low Ki had signed a TNA contract or was to sign one soon.  Well, another report surfaced today that he will sign a TNA deal soon as a wrestler, as well as, an agent for X Division matches.  If true, this is best case scenario as Low Ki will undoubtedly rejuvenate the X Division in and out of the ring.  As soon as we have confirmation by a credible source, we will be sure to bring it to you. Kudos to TNAMecca supporter PhenomAJJones for the heads up.

- On tonight's episode of Impact, Eric Young will defend his TNA world championship for the third time in less than a month.  On April 17th, he defeated Abyss in a brutal Monster's Ball match.  On April 27th, he defeated Magnus in a rematch from their battle on April 10th.  And tonight, he will defend his world title against an opponent to be named.  If ever there were any doubts that TNA would completely get behind Eric Young as world champion, I'd say they've ended those doubts.  Some wondered if he'd even be champion after Sacrifice, a mere 17 days after he won the belt.  It appears TNA are in it for the long haul and they haven't done a thing to make me think otherwise.  I am one of those who supported the decision by TNA to put the world title belt on Eric Young and so far, I can't say I've been let down.  In fact, based on what I've seen early on, I'd say we're in for a very interesting title reign and a memorable one.  EY has always been a special talent, and one who's been often overlooked by management simply because of the personality quirks that we've grown to love.  But it's those same quirks that will make him a unique world champion, one that's unlike any of those who came before him.  In pro wrestling history, whether it'd be in TNA or WWF or WCW, the most successful world champions marched to the beat of their own drum and I believe Eric Young has the potential to be one of them.
