#REWIND365: 22-28 Dec 2013

Welcome to #REWIND365 Where the Reaction Never Ends, a selective look at the week's offerings from #IMPACT365.  For those that have read this column before, the usual format is to hand out four awards; a bronze, silver and gold medal to my pick of the top three videos along with a wooden spoon for the video that tried but missed the mark.

Unfortunately, aside from a couple of Impact previews, there was only a grand total of four videos uploaded to #IMPACT365 this week.  With most of the TNA roster enjoying their Christmas holidays, it seems #IMPACT365 found itself well and truly in the midst of the Winter of No Content this week.

Until the Sun Shines

It’s the aftermath of Final Resolution and Jeff Hardy is not the TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Dixie Carter is beyond excited to have crowned Magnus as the new Champion and starting this Impact episode she has a big announcement to make. Not so fast. The Charismatic Enigma has something he wants to say first:

AJ Styles' Free Agency. It's Not a Work.

I've maintained, for several weeks, that the AJ Styles contract story is a work.  Through various rumors and reports, I managed to stick to my guns.  Even after Styles' official statement, I refused to believe otherwise.  It's a work, I kept telling myself.  Today's news hit me like a ton of bricks, forcing me to finally reassess my beliefs; forcing me to realize that AJ Styles is a free agent.  I've now officially accepted the fact that it's not a work.  Folks, TNA and AJ Styles have parted ways.

AJ Styles/TNA Negotiations Have Fallen Apart

PWInsider is reporting that the negotiations between TNA and AJ Styles have fallen apart and that he will most likely not return to the company anytime soon.  It was also announced today by Ring of Honor that Styles will be wrestling at their January 4th show in Nashville.  The location, I'm sure, is purely coincidental or at least I imagine so.  This is not good news for TNA fans as this story continues to ebb and flow, causing fans much consternation.  At this point, I'd like to see there be some resolution as the constant rumors and stories aren't helping either side.

Sonjay Dutt to Appear on One Night Only: Old School PPV

This afternoon, Sonjay Dutt posted the following update on his official Twitter account:

As we approach the day of the Old School tapings in Poughkeepsie, I'm sure we'll hear more names added to the card.  It's good to see TNA taking the same approach as they did for the 2013 One Night Only shows and inviting former talent to appear.  It makes the shows feel much more special.  There is no X Division match on the latest card so Sonjay Dutt's tweet indicates that the division that's always been part of TNA's history will be represented at the Old School event.

Post-IMPACT Discussion for Dec 26, 2013

One of my favorite activities after watching Impact is searching for forums in which fans can talk about the show and share with one another their thoughts.  However, it's getting increasingly harder to find venues where TNA fans can safely express their opinions on Impact without having to deal with the trolling of the anti-TNA crowd or the smarks who insist on taking the fun out of pro wrestling.

For this reason, we felt it was important to make TNAMecca available to its readers and any TNA fans who would like to discuss the show after watching it.  You can now visit TNAMecca immediately following Impact to do exactly that in the comments section below each and every week.  So please feel free to share with us your thoughts on tonight's Impact.  What did you think of the show?  What did you like or dislike?  Let us know.

TNA Thursday Randomania - Dec 26, 2013

- Before I begin, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and spent it with loved ones or doing something you enjoy.  My family and I celebrate on Christmas Eve so I had a nice relaxing Christmas, catching up on sleep, reading, and other stuff I've neglected lately.  In any case, on to this week's Randomania.  You'll notice the schnazzy new banner.  Randomania has become a weekly staple of TNAMecca so a re-branding was in order.  I hope to be able to share with you my weekly ramblings for a long time.

The TNA Niche

Well folks, it's the holiday season so "whoop dee do and dickory dot", and here in the cage we have hung up our socks.  It's pretty hard to write this column upside down, I guess I should've taken off my socks before I hung them up, but I digress. Being a TNA fan since 2002, I have learned something when introducing new fans to the product. It seems they either love it or hate it. I rarely hear anyone say: "TNA, yeah, it's OK." The internet crowd seems to hate it, die hard WWE fans won't give it a chance because it is not WWE, and the indie marks don't like it because it is mainstream. I don't mean to generalize; I know I'll get the old "but I'm a blank type of fan and I like TNA." I'm just taking an overview. I look at things like the "Monday Night War" of 2010 and I see that TNA could not capture the WWE audience away from Raw. I saw TNA sign Hulk Hogan and the TV ratings go down. I look at TNA on the road in 2013 and see that they cannot fill big arenas. I see that despite putting on a quality show, built around young talent with great wrestling, the internet critics and "dirtsheet" writers still find something wrong with it. Of course, a million or so people who watch Impact every week seem to like TNA, or at least watch it. Plus, there are TNA fan sites, like TNAMecca, who have many readers that feel passionately about the product. I also see the success TNA has had internationally, especially in the UK. However, I must say that from 2010 until recently, I feel I was a TNA fan by habit as opposed to passion. This had to do with such changes as the loss of the six sided ring, the dropping of some gimmick matches, a slowed down product and a confusion over whether they're TNA or Impact Wrestling. I understand that Dixie and crew were trying to grow their business, but by all accounts, it didn't work. I feel TNA works better as a niche product, one that caters to a certain audience. It may mean TNA has to stay relatively small (at least in North America), but I think it suits them better to stay that way.

Updated Line-Up for One Night Only: #OldSchool

ImpactWrestling.com has added two new matches to the One Night Only: #OldSchool PPV next Monday in Poughkeepsie, NY. Magnus will defend the World Heavyweight Title against his former partner and rival Samoa Joe, while Kurt Angle is scheduled to face Mr Anderson. Other stars announced to appear are Bad Influence, The BroMans, Eric Young, Velvet Skey & Lei'd Tapa. The World Title defense will be the first one ever on a One Night Only PPV, and if I'm correct, it will air in February next year.

In other ONO news, it's interesting to see what will happen to the British Empire Cup that was scheduled to be taped in Manchester next month. Dixie Carter last week announced they would be now taping two Impacts in Manchester, but did not give an update on the originally scheduled PPV. I personally hope that the Empire Cup is moved to Birmingham, while the Joker's Wild PPV scheduled to be in Birmingham is either moved or dropped, as I feel out of the two, the Empire Cup has a more unique theme compared to Joker's Wild.

Here is the updated line-up for One Night Only: #OldSchool:

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH
Magnus (c) vs Samoa Joe

FALLS COUNT ANYWHERE STREET FIGHT
Bully Ray vs Tommy Dreamer

LAST MAN STANDING MATCH
Bobby Roode vs James Storm

MONSTERS BALL MATCH
Jeff Hardy vs Abyss

Kurt Angle vs Mr Anderson

Charismatic Respect

Let’s set the stage for this edition of “Enigma Minded”.  The World Title Tournament is at its conclusion. Jeff  Hardy vs. Magnus at Final Resolution for the World Heavyweight Title in a Dixieland match.  The build up for this match throughout the PPV is reaching its climax. Rather than me just telling you what he said, I’ll just let you see for yourself.

UPDATE: Jeff Jarrett Resigns; TNA Releases Statement

This afternoon, Jeff Jarrett shocked the wrestling world by tweeting the following on his official Twitter account:

This is indeed shocking news simply because Jeff Jarrett had recently returned to TNA in a backstage management role. However, part of me wonders whether or not this is a work and possibly part of the AJ Styles storyline, which is something we thought could happen.  The feeling among TNA fans has always been that Jarrett could at any time get involved in the Dixie Carter/AJ Styles story in order to claim back what's rightfully his: TNA.  It'll be interesting to see what happens next but I, for one, hope that this is not real.

UPDATE: Shortly after Jeff Jarrett announced his resignation from TNA via Twitter, the company released the following official statement, TNA Entertainment, LLC announced today that it has accepted Mr. Jeff Jarrett’s resignation from the company effective January 6th, 2014.  Dixie Carter, President, commented "On behalf of TNA, we would like to thank Jeff for his contributions to the Company.  We wish him the very best and look forward to his continued participation as an investor in TNA Wrestling."

#REWIND365: 15-21 Dec 2013

Welcome to #REWIND365 Where the Reaction Never Ends, a selective look at the week's offerings from #IMPACT365.  Following another pre-recorded Impact, the video of choice for #IMPACT365 this week were the backstage interviews hot on the heels of Final Resolution.  Additionally with only a few short days left until Christmas, two of the TNA roster have already embraced the yuletide spirit and uploaded some festive tidbits.

Permission to worship them...

UPDATE: Davey Richards Teases Possibly Coming to TNA

In an interesting tidbit, Davey Richards, who wrestled for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla last night, cut a promo after his match against Johnny Gargano.  He told the crowd that he's "off to Orlando" which one would presume he meant NXT.  The fans, of course, began to chant NXT.  What followed was very interesting however...Richards replied that he said Orlando but he "didn't say where".

This perplexes me simply because I had accepted the fact that Davey Richards will most likely sign with the WWE at some point but I have a hard time believing it's a done deal if Davey would risk a contract with WWE by teasing a run in TNA.  Perhaps I'm reading too much into it but I imagine if Richards was certain that he'd be signed by the WWE, he'd never tease signing with TNA.  It wouldn't even occur to him.

UPDATE: According to my TNAMecca colleague, Nick Mann, Davey Richards was evidently referring to the EVOLVE show that he is scheduled to appear in January.  PWInsider has confirmed this as well.

TNA Thursday Randomania - Dec 19, 2013

- The AJ Styles story just doesn't seem to want to go away and if you think it's not by design, you're being naive.  This week, once again, kicked off with Styles' official statement, perfectly timed to be released the morning after the WWE PPV.  Three days later, and his statement is still being scrutinized.  "Is it real?",  "Is it a work?",  "Would AJ use scriptures if it were a work?",  "If it is real, why is AJ questioning his place in pro wrestling?".  I'll be honest with you.  I have maintained all along that this is a work and, this week, I began to question whether I was, perhaps, in denial.  That feeling lasted for about a few minutes, however, because my gut tells me otherwise.  This is a work, folks.

REVIEW: One Night Only TNA World Cup

For this One Night Only pay per view event, TNA took an old concept and changed it up. In previous World Cup type of events the focus has been solely on the X division. This time around we have teams made up of Heavyweights, Tag Teams, Knockouts and X Division wrestlers.  Four teams of five (Team USA, Team UK, Team International and Team Aces & Eights) compete for the illusive "World Cup of Wrestling." Move over FIFA, it's time for TNA World Cup!

AJ Styles' Official Statement on TNA Contract Status

This morning, AJ Styles issued the following statement in regards to his contract status with TNA:
Today for the first time in 11 years, AJ Styles awakes to find himself without a professional wrestling contract. I can’t help but think how did I get here, what must I have done wrong, did I not deliver in the ring, etc. All of those are pertinent questions that any man or woman who finds himself or herself unemployed would ask. I have always prided myself in being the wrestler that stays away from the things in this business that could easily destroy myself, my family, my marriage, and even my career. A wrestler who goes above and beyond to give the fans what they paid to see. I move forward not bitter, but better for the blessings and memories that I have been a part of since TNA’s inception.
When this contract renegotiation journey started several months ago, my wife and I began praying for God to close doors that needed to be closed and to open the doors that He wanted us to walk through. We asked him to prepare us for this journey and to help us to have the faith to be obedient to what He would have us to do. I am assured by the name Immanuel in Matthews 1:23 that I will never be alone. Hebrews 13.5, says He will never leave us or forsake us. There is a lot in this world that I am unsure of, especially in this moment, but there is one thing that I am certain. Contracts may expire, but the promise of Immanuel will never expire.

As my family and I move forward with my wrestling career, we will turn to Jabez’s prayer found in 1 Chronicles 4:10.
Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory,
that Your hand would be with me,
and that You would keep me from evil.
My family and I are both grateful for the platform that TNA has allowed me to experience. TNA has been a blessing to our family for many years. We have made many friendships and many more memories. While you may not be seeing AJ Styles in TNA, you can be sure that he will be traveling the world and delivering many more Phenomenal matches. Visit AJStyles.org for a complete list of bookings.
Sincerely,
AJ Styles P1

#REWIND365: 08-15 Dec 2013

Welcome to #REWIND365 Where the Reaction Never Ends, a selective look at the week's offerings from #IMPACT365.  Entitlement issues, title changes, suitcases full of title shots, Spud ordering a shot titled a "Lady-Boy Chaser"... all in all a busy week on Impact!

I am happy to say that #IMPACT365 seems be recovering well from the festive drought, with reactionary videos from a whole host of stars, some more coverage of TNA's international endeavours and a few oddities inbetween.  So if you've not had time to catch all of the action, I give you my pick of the week's best as a place to start.  Agree?  Disagree?  Let us know.

You Are Abyss........

Even as much as I had somewhat lost a bit of patience with the Joseph Park/Abyss storyline recently (as most people had), the wrestlers involved have dragged me back in.  Like the Michael Corleone line in Godfather 3, "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!", I am hooked again.  When I attended the Salt Lake City IMPACT tapings in October, the Abyss I saw up close in person seemed to be back to stay.  I was fairly sure at that time that the storyline would soon kick into high gear.  Well, that was the Halloween episode so, given the near 2 months that have passed since then, that would be the equivalent of it going into a low to middle gear instead.  It went back to treading water and bidding its time.  However, now in retrospect I understand why things began trending that way.  Bad Influence has been the final element that was missing from the equation with EY & Joseph, and now The Best Coast Boogiemen have made this feud into a very important part of IMPACT.

Delbusto Presents...Joseph Park/Abyss Reveal!

I found this outstanding video online by wrestling fan Delbusto and I think it deserves to be seen by as many people as possible because it is simply brilliant. You're in for a treat so make sure you check it out.

Additions and Changes to Hardcore Justice Line-up

ImpactWrestling.com has now added Velvet Sky vs Lei'D Tapa in a Street Fight and Team Angle vs Team Roode in Lethal Lockdown to the One Night Only: Hardcore Justice PPV. In addition to those matches, Bully Ray vs Mr Anderson is no longer a Steel Cage match, and will now be a Stretcher Match. And the X Division Xscape match no longer involves Samoa Joe and will be Chris Sabin vs Austin Aries. I'm very impressed with the line-up for this show, if this is to set the tone for the One Night Only shows in 2014, we have some great events to look forward to. Here's the updated line-up for the show:

LETHAL LOCKDOWN MATCH
Team Angle vs Team Roode

STRETCHER MATCH
Bully Ray vs. Mr. Anderson

FULL METAL MAYHEM MATCH
"The Monster" Abyss & Eric Young vs. "Bad Influence" Christopher Daniels & Kazarian

STEEL CAGE X-DIVISION XSCAPE MATCH
Austin Aries vs. Chris Sabin

TABLES MATCH
Ethan Carter III vs. Tommy Dreamer

STREET FIGHT
Lei'D Tapa vs Velvet Sky

TNA Thursday Randomania - Dec 12, 2013

- I'd like to begin, this week, with the story that broke late Sunday night, and has had the wrestling world buzzing ever since: AJ Styles leaving TNA.  I'll be honest with you, I haven't a clue whether or not this is part of a storyline or not.  In fact, anyone who's not privy to the inner workings of TNA doesn't either.  This is a case in which TNA could very well be working us or one in which the two sides could not agree to a deal, resulting in Styles becoming a free agent.  So which is it?  The correct answer is we simply do not know, and anyone who says they do is not being truthful.  That includes PWInsider, the source of the report.

Seasoned Enigma

It would be easy to assume that by the title of this column that I’m going to talk about me and introduce myself. However it’s not about me but about the “Charismatic Enigma” Jeff Hardy. Let me begin by saying it would be very easy for me to mark out when talking about Jeff Hardy. I’m also from North Carolina and I’ve followed his career since the OMEGA days.  So there’s lots I could say but I’ll spare you the details at this point. As you know when it comes to Jeff there is lots to talk about. It’s something that I can’t cover in just one article. That will have to be done over time. I’m going to be talking about his current run in TNA. Plus it’s a good place for us to begin.

What's Up with TNA AFTER the U.K. Tour?

What is life in TNA going to look like after the 2014 U.K. Tour?  With it being traditionally the highest-attended events that TNA puts on annually, I find myself feeling like, in some ways, this week-long trip to the U.K. serves as a real-life "turning point" for the company.  The last 2 years when the tour has been televised, I get so excited to see which IMPACT performers the passionate fans there will cheer and which they will boo.  The United Kingdom has some of the best TNA fans in the world (and we are graced by 2 of them on our team here at TNAMecca).  The classic case of the U.K. crowds becoming a tangible character was when they exposed to the world in 2012 that Garrett Bischoff sucked and that Hulk Hogan was foolish for pushing him.  Sure, the audio techs took out a big chunk of the "heat noise" from that in-ring segment but it was obvious what was going on to all of us.  When a crowd is THAT vocal and THAT into the product it makes it extra fun for the viewers at home.  My question is, what is TNA doing AFTER this upcoming 2014 U.K. Tour ends and normal operations in the U.S. resume?

AJ Styles Done with TNA?

PWInsider is reporting that AJ Styles will become a free agent on December 17th and officially be done with TNA.  Styles is reportedly, also, already accepting independent bookings via his agent.  Although we trust PWInsider as a source, we will consider this a rumor until we hear an official announcement from TNA or AJ Styles.  Unfortunately, this is disheartening news if you are a TNA fan but I'm still hopeful that this is somehow part of a storyline.  If not, it will be a tough pill to swallow but TNA will go on without him.  Although many consider Styles the face of the company, there are a some fans who aren't as enamored by him or believe he's a draw.  Personally, I hope the two sides will come to an agreement.  Regardless of your opinion of him, AJ Styles is part of the fabric that is TNA. Always will be.

#REWIND365: 31 Nov - 07 Dec 2013

Welcome to #REWIND365 Where the Reaction Never Ends, a selective look at the week's offerings from #IMPACT365.  Much like bathroom scales across America, #IMPACT365 seems to be suffering in the wake of the Thanksgiving celebrations.  The uploads are not appearing as thick and fast as we have previously seen, but with the recent break in filming at an end I am hoping this lull in activity will be short-lived.

RUMOR: TNA and Extreme Tiger Agree to Terms on a Deal?

According to a few reliable sources, TNA and Extreme Tiger, formerly of AAA, are rumored to have reached a deal that will bring the luchador's talents to Impact Wrestling.  We can not, however, confirm this nor has there been any official announcement by either party so it is still a rumor.  What we do know is Extreme Tiger appeared at last night's tapings in a match against Zema Ion that was reportedly filmed for Xplosion.  Although we do not typically post spoilers, we're comfortable making an exception in this case.

In an article I wrote last week, I pointed out how important it is that TNA look into recruiting and signing international talents so I'm happy to see the company go this route.  I'm not very familiar with Extreme Tiger's career but I have watched a couple of his matches and he'd be a nice fit for the X Division.  But this sort of signing also presents some challenges simply because international wrestlers often do not connect with US crowds, particularly those who speak little or no English.  It'll be interesting to see how TNA goes about introducing him to the Impact audience but again, I'm glad to see that TNA are making efforts to bring in new talents.  More to come...

TNA Thursday Randomania - Dec 5, 2013

- This week, I'd like to begin with a match that we've been reporting on for the last couple of weeks...the one between AJ Styles and Preston City Wrestling champion Lionheart.  Although there were indications that the two men would face each other at PCW's Festive Fury III on December 6th, it now appears that the match will not take place.  From what I understand, both Styles and Lionheart publicly agreed to the match.  Later, PCW announced via their Twitter account that they agreed to host the match on December 6th, pending Dixie Carter's approval.  Since then, there has been no sign of the match taking place nor has there been any promotion or advertising by PCW for a potential face-off between the two.  However, Lionheart is still scheduled to wrestle at the event but his opponent is to be determined.  There could still be one explanation: PCW have been asked by TNA to wait until after tonight's Impact before they officially announce the match.  Could something happen on tonight's show that precipitates an announcement by AJ Styles and/or PCW?  I suppose we will know soon enough.

Could AJ Styles Defend his TNA Title in Ring of Honor?

A few days ago, AJ Styles started posting photos from his days in Ring of Honor on his Facebook account.  Under normal circumstances, I'd say such an action would be unprecedented but if taken within the context of Styles' current storyline, the photos could easily be dismissed as the TNA World Heavyweight Champion simply trolling Dixie Carter.  But let's for a moment consider this...could AJ Styles possibly defend his TNA title in Ring of Honor?  Could there ever be an agreement between TNA and ROH whose partnership ended abruptly many years ago?

Currently, it appears that the plan is for AJ Styles to defend his title in promotions internationally but I think it would make sense to end Styles' tour in the United States.  The logistics of such an event would be much less complicated than an overseas show if, let's say, TNA wanted to perhaps "invade" a promotion for one night.  Although ROH isn't as prestigious as it was five years ago, its name is still much more recognizable than promotions such as Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.  Of course, this is all speculation based on Styles posting a few photos on his account but nonetheless, it's fun to think about.  What do you guys think?  Could the two promotions put the hard feelings behind them and find a way to work together?  Is this something you'd like to see happen?

02 December 2013

Change is Coming to TNA. This Time, for Real.

There were quite a few things that I disliked about the Hogan/Bischoff era but the one thing that truly irritated me was the constant hyping of "change" in TNA.  Since the arrival of Hogan and Bischoff, all we heard was "change is coming", "TNA will change forever", "things will never be the same", etc.  If it wasn't Dixie Carter hyping "change" on social media or interviews, it was Hogan shoving it down our throats on Impact.  And it all started the night Hulk Hogan appeared on UFC for the much-ballyhooed announcement that Impact would be moving to Mondays on January 4th to battle the WWE.  It all reeked of aggrandizement but we all bought it.  We all fell for it.  What fools we all were.

#REWIND365: 24-30 Nov 2013

Welcome to #REWIND365 Where the Reaction Never Ends, a selective look at the week's offerings from #IMPACT365.  I hadn't intended to turn this edition into a Thanksgiving special, but aside from a few post-Turning Point reactions and a couple of other oddities, the bulk of this week's output was dominated by members of the TNA roster telling us what they are thankful for.

Everyone deserves to be with their family at this time of year, working their stomach muscles with copious amounts of turkey and mashed potato, and that includes wrestlers.  With that in mind, it is completely understandable that there was not the variety of uploads that we have seen in previous weeks.  There were some gems however, and in case you were unable to steal a few moments away from family I have chosen my favourites from this Thanksgiving week.
